FANNI

This picture of Fanni, aged 13, sitting at a table marked the beginning of my series of photographic portraits. Can you guess what she was concentrating on? Of course a mobile phone under the table. I asked her to remain there for a moment to give me time to take a picture. In the final version, I turned the picture upright. I went on to set up my studio with the same arrangement: the subjects are leaning against a black table varnished to a shiny finish with daylight from a southern aspect filtering through trees and the window. The matte black of the background wall strangely changed colour according to the subject. I started to use LEDs for auxiliary lighting, since they are light, easy to move and provide high luminosity. I put worn-out light-coloured silk scarves in front of them to soften the light. Ultimately, additional lighting was not even needed, since the sky is the best lighting designer in the world.
