This photograph of dancer-choreographer Virpi Pahkinen taken at night on the edge of a table is a proto-image for all my photographic portraits. It contains, for the first time, all the required elements in their right places: the only thing on show is a human being free of time and place with the background disappearing into the velvet of night. Virpi is wrapped in a gold-coloured piece of cloth, but she appears to be wearing a valuable costume. The position of the hands belongs to Virpi’s language of dance, being at the same time a sign or plant, in perfect equilibrium. We have both drawn a great deal upon the treasures of Asian art and thinking. This photograph was on display for the first time in my exhibition Sublime in Tokyo in 2004. The small image is given a Baroque setting with a frame dating from the 17th century of Rembrandt.
Yöllä pöydän reunalla otettu kuva tanssija-koreografi Virpi Pahkisesta on kantakuva kaikille muotokuvilleni. Siinä ovat kaikki elementit ensimmäistä kertaa paikallaan: esillä on vain ajasta ja paikasta vapaa ihminen, taustan kadotessa yön samettiin. Virpi on kääriytynyt kankaanpalaan, mutta näyttää siltä kuin hän kantaisi arvokasta pukua. Käsien asento on Virpin tanssikieltä, samaan aikaan merkki tai kasvi, täydellisessä tasapainossa. Olemme kummatkin ammentaneet paljon Aasian taiteiden ja ajattelun aarteista. Valokuva oli ensi kertaa esillä Tokiossa Sublime-näyttelyssäni vuonna 2004. Pieni kuva on saanut barokkitunnelmaa ympärilleen, sillä kehykset ovat Rembrandtin 1600-lukua.
